The first morning of the 10 days of Kerala's Onam festival found this pookkalam in front of Amma's steps. The flower-petal design was made by students of Amrita University. For each of the next 10 days, the students will create a new design before dawn. Families make pookkalams during Onam in order to welcome back the ancient Kerala King Mahabali, who returns to visit his subjects each year on the final day of Onam.
