As part of Amma's pledge to provide 100 crores (23 million U.S. dollars) in tsunami-relief aid to Southern India, the Ashram began dispersing financial aid to the residents of Alappad Panchayat on January 12, 2005 in Amritapuri. The aid being given this day was to be used to purchase cooking vessels lost in the Tsunami.
