When the earthquake struck off the coast of Sumatra on December 26th, 2004, tremors occurred in India and the sea water rose in many places. The tremors were also felt in Amritapuri.
The sea water first entered the Ashram grounds at 12:22:43 p.m. After the first flooding, the sea became calm. Despite this, Amma asked for announcements to be made over the speakers at the Ashram telling all the devotees to go to the 16-story building of the Ashram. The announcements were made in different languages since there were more than 13,000 people from different regions of India and from around the world at the Ashram, including nearly a thousand international visitors. Amma also asked that all the vehicles at the beach be removed immediately.
